I never thought as a REALTOR, I would have to chase after a BEAR...but I did!  Buckle up because this is a wild ride.

My client was purchasing a home in a nice suburban neighborhood with a large back yard complete with, you guessed it, a 6' tall BLACK BEAR...a bear that had been carved out of a tree.  (Gotcha for a second, didn't I?) The tree/bear was still rooted to the ground.  Yes, we checked.

Nothing was said in the listing, contract, counter offers or verbally about the tree/bear not conveying with the property.  We did our final walk thru 24 hours prior only to find that the tree/bear had been saw cut at the base and hauled away! Leaving a 3' by 3' stump with fresh saw carvings in its place.  Needless to say, my Buyer was NOT happy.  He wanted the Bear! It added a certain character to the back yar and he wanted it back! That's right, I was on the phone until 10:30pm looking for a solution so we could still close at 4pm the following day.

It turns out the Seller shipped the bear and all their belongings to Baltimore and they would be sitting in a storage unit for 3 weeks until they could  move to thier new home.  The Sellers had pre-sigend and were headed for vacation.  They were not going to bring the bear back.  So now what?

Time to chase down a NEW bear! It turns out that here in Columbus, OH, in the small town of Clintonville, OH we have a tree carver artist.  I found him at Como Mowers on Indianola Ave., I stopped in there and was able to speak with him the day of the closing to get a quote for what it would take to make a new bear.  The people at Como mowers could not have been nicer and more helpful! They asked if I had a treee?...."um, no...I'm going to need one of those too", I said.  "That's okay, I have the perfect piece of wood to make you a 6' bear and would be glad to do it"  the bear carver said.  So I obtained the quote and called my client to ask if I was able to get him a "new bear" would that be okay with him?  He loved the idea and agreed that this could be the solution.

After negotiating with the Seller's Agent and the Sellers agreeing to pay for a new bear, it was added to the HUD and the last line of the HUD read, BEAR CARVING.  A check was cut at closing to the carver, My Client was Happy and we closed ON TIME!

Now, I can say...I will even chase a BEAR for my clients, Just Ask Me!
